Traditional Occupational Therapy is generally tabletop work with focus on specific skill development and outcomes such as feeding, toileting, self-care and other gross and fine motor skills. It generally relies on an instruction based, skill progression approach requiring the participant’s ability to concentrate and focus.
Our sensorimotor intensive therapy is initially more foundational in nature rather than focusing on specific and higher processing skill acquisition. It challenges sensory processing and motor planning domains and aims to integrate primitive reflexes. This is achieved by progressing through neurodevelopmental and other structured motor movement patterns with varying sensory stimuli to assist motor coordination and sensory reactivity and ultimately to encourage sensorimotor integration.
In plain English, this just means the sensorimotor program is foundational, helps the participant to be in better control of their body, and reduces sensory overload. This then places the participant in a better position for more specific skill acquisition from an OT or any other skill-based program.
